Planning that Works – delivering real outcomes for Tasmania

Planning is often judged by its process but communities experience it through outcomes.

This year’s conference shifts the focus from theory to delivery: what planning is actually producing across Tasmania, and how those outcomes can be improved. From housing supply and infrastructure delivery to environmental resilience and major projects, planners are working at the centre of some of the state’s most complex and consequential challenges.

Planning that Works brings together practitioners, policymakers, and industry leaders to share real projects, honest reflections, and practical lessons. We will explore how planning decisions translate into outcomes on the ground (in towns, cities, and regions) and examine what helps projects move forward, where the system creates friction, and how planning practice can continue to evolve.

The focus is clear: how do we ensure planning systems, policies and professional judgement enable delivery, rather than delay it?

This is a conference for practitioners who want to move beyond process and focus on impact. What we are approving, what we are delivering, and what difference it is making for Tasmania.

Sub-themes:

Planning at the forefront – Tasmanian approaches shaping what comes next

Tasmania is facing a lot of change, and planning is responding for our communities. From the regional land use strategies to the renewable energy sector to local environmental strategies, the sector is at the fore of Tasmania’s future.

Making it happen – planning as the connector between ideas and delivery

Planners don’t work in isolation. We work in a field that intersects with environmental, transport, civil, social, political and economic fields. We will be exploring how these complementary fields experience planning, and how they add value to our projects.

Looking outward – applying lessons from beyond Tasmania

Our world is ever-changing, and we’ll be exploring how the planning sector is pivoting with these changes. We will explore topics like AI and the digital revolution or innovative planning models from further afield.
