Call for Abstracts

The Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) is excited to announce the call for abstracts for the 2026 Tasmanian State Conference, reflecting this year's theme and sub-themes.

2026 Conference Theme

Planning that Works – delivering real outcomes for Tasmania

Exploring how planning sets up our communities for success.

Sub-Themes

To guide submissions, the conference program is structured around the following three sub-themes.

Sub-theme 1

Planning at the forefront – Tasmanian approaches shaping what comes next

Tasmania is facing a lot of change, and planning is responding for our communities. From the regional land use strategies to the renewable energy sector to local environmental strategies, the sector is at the fore of Tasmania’s future.

We want to shine the light on the planning projects that are guiding our communities futures, and are present-day actions for our future communities.

Sub-theme 2

Making it happen – planning as the connector between ideas and delivery

Planners don’t work in isolation. We work in a field that intersects with environmental, transport, civil, social, political and economic fields. We will be exploring how these complementary fields experience planning, and how they add value to our projects.

Have you worked on an interdisciplinary project? Examples of this include transport projects or land-use projects that might change the major economies of our regions.

Sub-theme 3

Looking outward – applying lessons from beyond Tasmania

Our world is ever-changing, and we’ll be exploring how the planning sector is pivoting with these changes. We want to explore topics like AI and the digital revolution or innovative planning models from further afield.

Abstract Submission

We invite planners, researchers, practitioners and community voices to submit abstracts for papers, panels and presentations across all three conference themes. We particularly welcome submissions that draw on lived experience, innovative practice, and cross-disciplinary thinking
