How it works

Managed by the Emerging Planners Committee in each state or territory, this national initiative is part of the Emerging Planners Network, and it’s here to help you unlock your potential. It's your opportunity to:

Gain real-world insights beyond the lecture room or your workplace

Build meaningful relationships with professionals who’ve been where you are

Grow your confidence, direction and career momentum

What is mentoring?

Mentoring is more than advice, it’s a mutually beneficial relationship where an experienced planner helps a less experienced planner:

  • Identify personal and professional goals
  • Navigate early-career challenges
  • Grow into the kind of planner they want to be

Eligibility

The program is open to PIA members only.

To become a mentee, you’ll either be an emerging planner with up to 5 years’ experience or a soon-to-be graduate.

To get involved as a mentor, you should be an experienced planner in your field. Mentors can have less than 5 years’ graduate experience if they apply to mentor current students.

Program commitment

You’ll both agree to meet regularly, at least once a month for one hour, at a suitable time over a one-year period. You’ll also attend mentor program and networking events throughout the year.

How we match mentors and mentees

You’ll fill out a survey including your professional interests, experience and preferences. We’ll use this to match you with the right mentor or mentee. If either one of you is uncomfortable with the pairing or decides that it’s not successful, you can end your mentorship through our ‘no fault’ process.
