The Role of Heritage in Good Design
Introduction to the application of State Planning Policy 7.0 in a heritage context.
Exploring how heritage considerations align with each of the ten design principles.

Heritage Areas, Character Areas, and Sustainable Development
Distinguishing between Heritage Areas and Character Areas, and approaches to managing each.
Responding to density increases and infill development in historic settings.
Assessing design appropriateness in terms of bulk, form, scale, materials, and integration with existing fabric.
Case studies showcasing successful heritage sensitive developments.

Managing Heritage Outcomes
Understanding Statements of Significance and their role in planning and design decisions.
Principles and best practice for adaptive re use of heritage buildings.
Applying an understanding of heritage value to guide design responses.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, participants will:
Understand how heritage assessments inform and enhance design quality.
Be able to assess and guide development proposals within heritage contexts.
Confidently balance heritage values with sustainable development objectives.

Local and state government planners, architects, and heritage consultants with some prior knowledge of heritage management (e.g. through Course 1 or professional experience).
