PLANET VIC | Aboriginal Cultural Heritage- An overview of requirements and responsibilities for planners working in LGA

The Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 (the Act) and the Aboriginal Heritage Regulations 2018 prescribes mechanisms and protections for Aboriginal cultural heritage relevant to local government authorities. The course will provide planners with a comprehensive overview of legislative responsibilities and requirements under the Act and Regulations – the primary pieces of legislation providing protection for Aboriginal cultural heritage in Victoria; and equip planners with an increased understanding of when and how Aboriginal cultural heritage is linked to the planning system and when and how Aboriginal cultural heritage needs to be considered in relation to development and high impact activities.

Learning Outcomes

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of considerations of Aboriginal cultural heritage
  • Understand legislative requirements and responsibilities under the Act and regulations as they relate to planning processes
  • Understand when a Cultural Heritage Management Plan (CHMP) is required – particularly as relating to significant ground disturbance.
