This course is designed for NSW professionals. This course will provide you with a practical and robust introduction to the NSW Planning System.
Event Outline
This course will provide you with a practical and robust introduction to the NSW Planning System. It will be especially beneficial to people from a non-planning background that would like a better understanding of how urban planning operates in NSW. Participants will be provided with a range of planning documents in the course notes and a planning jargon buster.
Learning Outcomes
- The purposes and rationale for planning;
- Planning terms and jargon;
- How the planning system works in NSW and in Australia;
- How local councils fit into the planning system;
- The role of land use zones in planning;
- How the two main planning tasks (controlling development and making plans) work; and
- The purpose of the main planning documents used by planners.
Designed For
Staff at public and private organisations who work with planners and/or interact with the planning system. It would also be useful for members of the public who are interested in finding out how the planning system works.

Emeritus Professor Peter Phibbs
Peter resigned from the University of Sydney in 2021 after a 35-year career teaching urban planning at the University of Sydney and the University of Western Sydney. He spent the last 7 years at the University of Sydney as the Director of the Henry Halloran Trust, a research Trust funded through philanthropy.
He now runs a small consultancy providing planning training (focusing on Planning for Non-Planners) as well as advice about affordable housing issues.
He has a continued interest in advocating for planning and supporting NSW Local Aboriginal Land Councils in achieving fairer outcomes from the NSW Planning system.
