Call for Nominations to serve on the Victorian Young Planners Committee

Would you like to become more involved with the planning profession? This is an opportunity to contribute to your industry, build professional relationships and make new friends.

The Victorian Young Planners Committee (VYP) is the State Divisional Committee of the National Young Planners. Their purpose is to connect, support and inform a network of young planners in Victoria, through events, regular updates and representation. The network is guided by the VYP Committee, who hold monthly meetings to determine the strategic direction, activities and initiatives the group should undertake.

In 2011, the VYP Committee made a concerted effort to provide more opportunities, resources and a collective voice to the emerging planners of Victoria. Key achievements included; a submission made on behalf of young planners in Victoria to the 2011 review of Victoria’s planning system, the introduction of a step payment plan for young planners wishing to attend the PIA National Congress, opportunities for young planners to participate in international development in Sri Lanka, and a significant increase in attendance at all VYP events. The VYP Committee is committed to building on these achievements in 2012, and this is your opportunity to get involved!

The terms of current members of the Victorian Young Planners Committee expire this year on 1 March 2012. The VYP are now calling for nominations from anyone who wishes to serve on the committee by Tuesday 28 February 2012.

Please note the following:

• Nominees are preferred to be current financial members of PIA.
• VYP Committee members must be “a student or graduate of a planning or planning related degree with up to 5 years post graduate experience”.
• Retiring members are entitled to renominate.
• The successful nominees will serve for a one year period commencing 1 March 2012.

Nominations must include a brief summary explaining what you will contribute to the Committee for the 2012-2013 year (a series of dot points is sufficient).

VYP Survey on the Review of the Victorian Planning System

As you may be aware, the Victorian Planning System is currently under review, and the Ministerial Advisory Committee undertook a consultation process requesting feedback of key stakeholders in the industry in the second half of 2011.

The Victorian Young Planners Committee were invited to attend an informal meeting with the Advisory Committee, to give them the perspective of what it is like to be a new user of the system and what issues concern young planners specifically.

In the interests of providing solid feedback which was representative of the wider Young Planners network, the VYP Committee undertook an online survey of student and early professional planners in Victoria. The survey elicited nearly 50 responses, and the committee were able to consolidate these responses into a written submission which they presented to the Advisory Committee at the meeting on 30 September. The VYP submission can be accessed here.

Exchanges between mentors and their mentees can cover a broad range of topics, from workplace and leadership issues to discussion of current planning issues. This is a two way professional development opportunity, for mentors to develop leadership skills whilst also giving back to the profession and gaining PIA PD points, and for mentees to gain valuable wisdom and advice when beginning their planning career journey.
