PIA (formerly the Royal Australian Planning Institute) came into being on
July 1, 2002. The Institute itself was founded in 1951 and is today the only
National organisation representing qualified urban and regional planners in
Australia. The organisation comprises a federation of State and Territory
Divisions and also includes an overseas division. PIA (Vic) plays key roles in
promoting and supporting the planning profession within Victoria and advocating
on key planning and public policy issues. |

Local Government Planning Internships
 | The Planning Institute of Australia, (PIA) Victoria division recognises the importance of supporting planning at all levels and across a range of different planning backgrounds, and for young planners to be aware of varied opportunities in non-metropolitan areas. It is for these reasons PIA Victoria has partnered with the Victorian Government and the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) to offer two new initiatives assisting the professional development of planning students and planning assistants:
- Provincial Victoria Local Government Internship, and
- Provincial Victoria Local Government Planning Assistant Training Program.

Over recent years PIA has become increasingly aware of the synergies that exist and the "cause and effect" relationship between planning decisions and the impact these decisions have on the health of our community.
This awareness has lead to concerns that while the community,
collectively and individually, continues to pay the social and
financial health burden costs associated with various "lifestyle"
diseases such as diabetes, obesity and heart disease, various aspects
of planning and urban management continue to reinforce these unhealthy
and costly trends.
