The Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) promotes excellence in planning
and is the national professional organisation representing qualified planners
in Australia. It was founded in 1951 as the Royal Australian Planning Institute
(RAPI) and now has more than 3500 members in Divisions in every state and
territory in Australia, in addition to overseas members.
The institute's goals are to:
- promote planning, both as a process and as a professional discipline
- provide support for all planners
- elevate the status and influence of the profession and the Institute with all levels of government, related disciplines and other peak agencies/organisations
- maintain membership entry requirements and maintain professional standards by providing a program of continuing professional development
- develop and main relations with related disciplines and international planning organisations
- effectively manage the institute's affairs

Minister annouces review of the Resource Management and Planning System
Hon. Steve Kons, Minister for Infrastructure, Resources, Planning and Workplace Relations announced on 5 March 2008 a review of the planning system in Tasmania. The terms of reference for the review can be viewed at http://www.justice.tas.gov.au/landuseplanning/planningsystemreview. PIA will be closely following the progression of the review and when the initial findings are placed for public comment will be preparing a submission of behalf of the membership. Any comments or thoughts on this review should be forwarded to the divisional president.
Shaping Training for Planning Assistants
The Local Government Training Package is currently being reviewed with PIA National Office are relevant stakeholder. The area of the package most relevant to planning is the review of the Certificate IV and Diploma qualification in Local Government (Planning) which targets the development of planning assistants. This training package is an important tool in assisting in nation wide shortages of planning professional. The draft qualifications framework documents and the draft units of competency have been loaded onto the Government Skills Australia website. Foundations for the Future
The 'Foundations for the Future' is a consultation process that PIA is undetaking about the future of planning education. PIA National Education Committee commissioned a team of consultants (Nicole Gurran, Barbara Norman and Brendan Gleeson) to undertake the reivew and prepared a discussion paper which was launched at the recent National Council Forum. The discussion paper addresses six broad aspects of PIA's planning education role:
- Industry-education engagement
- Supporting research and scholarship
- Course accreditation
- PIA education policy
- Advocacy and leadership, and
- Education access and equity.
