The Queensland Young Planners Group

Vision

The Queensland Young Planners Group is committed to providing valuable and relevant services to Young Planners in Queensland to support the development of Young Planners, build networks, provide opportunities for Young Planners and enhance the role Young Planners play in the wider profession. As a Committee we will work to promote the broad interests of Queensland Young Planners, provide high quality professional development activities, inspire professional integrity and link Young Planners across Queensland to the broader planning community.

What is the QYPG?

The QYPG is both a representative group for, and service provider to, Queensland Young Planners. We also support PIA in the promotion of the planning profession and attracting members. The QYPG comprises a team of energetic and dedicated young professionals who advocate for and support young planners, whilst bringing a fresh approach to the wider Institute.

The QYPG aims to provide both educational and social opportunities for planning students and young professionals, whilst also facilitating opportunities for networking, learning, participating in policy decisions, and for generally enjoying the profession.

QYPG Mentoring Program

The Queensland Young Planners Mentoring Program was launched across Queensland in 2009, its main purpose to offer an opportunity for experienced planners to pass on key skills and knowledge and provide career guidance to students and graduate planners in the formative stages of their careers. Mentors and Mentees from across Queensland have participated in this program since its inception in 2009. The Mentoring Program sees mentoring pairs meet and/or correspond on a regular basis to discuss relevant issues and form a mutually beneficial relationship. QYPG facilitate this program and provide assistance along the way, however it remains the responsibility of each pair to ensure their participation in this program is as effective as possible.

Expressions of Interest for the 2012 QYPG Mentoring Program close on Friday 18th November 2011. For further details, please contact the Program Coordinator, Laura Gannon at qldyoungplanners@planning.org.au or go to the Mentor Program page.

QYPG Rural & Regional Work Experience Program

The Queensland Young Planners Group established the Rural and Regional Work Experience Program in 2009. Now in its third year the program has continued to be a success. The aim of the program is to establish a new initiative encouraging more Young Planners to seek employment in rural and regional Queensland and increase the number of qualified planning staff working in rural and regional Queensland. The Pilot Program won a Merit Award at the Planning Institute of Australia (Qld Division) Excellence Awards in 2009 for its contribution to regional and rural planning practice.

2011 Rural and Regional Work Experience Program - Relaunched

The 2011 Rural and Regional Work Experience Program (WEP 2011) was postponed at the start of 2011 due to extensive flooding across Queensland. Now that the immediate impacts of the floods have passed the program is being relaunched with Expressions of Interest now open for local government, state government agencies and young planners. This year’s program has expanded to include state agencies offices outside of South East Queensland in addition to local governments.

Young planners selected for the program will now undertake the work placement between November 2011 and January 2012.

Expressions of Interest for the 2011 Program have now closed.

A Voice - Its worthwhile to participate in an organisation that actively seeks to have issues relevant to the profession raised in the public domain.

Networking Opportunities - The Institute provides an environment where it is easy to develop new contacts within the profession.
