"Improved Settlement Planning and Environmental Health in Remote Aboriginal Communities"

This paper was originally written in 1999. It explores the role of settlement or town planning in addressing environmental health issues in remote Aboriginal communities in Australia. The author argues that conventional approaches to town planning for these communities is not appropriate and proposes a new model which goes some way towards meeting the unique social/spatial characteristics of Aboriginal communities.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues are becoming increasingly important at every level of government in Australia, especially through the ‘Closing the Gap’ agenda adopted by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) and through various other measures. As a result of these activities, planners are increasingly working directly and indirectly with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities in a range of planning contexts.
