On 24 August 2011 the Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities released the government response to the independent review of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) as part of a broad package of reforms for Australia’s national environment law.
Creating Places for People: an urban design protocol for Australia Cities
Creating Places for People is a collaborative commitment to best practice urban design in Australia. The protocol is the result of two years of collaboration between peak community and industry organisations, States, Territories, Local Governments, and the Australian Government.

Bicycle Victoria's Draft Planning Checklist for Cycling 19 August 2011
PIA has made a submission to Bicycle Victoria's draft Planning Checklist for Cycling which attempts to distil the current research and planning laws and guidelines for cycling into a series of step-by-step checklist items for planning and developing new suburbs. The Checklist aims to clarify the requirements for cycling in the complex planning process and give objective and achieveable assessment criteria.
Do You Agree with PIA Supporting a Price on Carbon? PIA Members Survey Results
In June 2011 PIA ran an online survey through the website to see whether PIA should support ‘A price on Carbon’.
Out of the 288 respondents (261 members and 27 non-members), 74.3% answered ‘Yes” and 25.7% answered ‘No’. Out of the 288 responses, 100 people also left a comment. The full range of comments can be viewed here. Please note that all comments were submitted anonymously.
The Productivity Commission’s Performance Benchmarking of Australian Business Regulation: Planning, Zoning and Development Assessments Research Report
The Australian Government requested that the Productivity Commission undertake a benchmarking study into Planning, Zoning and Development Assessments. The Commission released an Issues Paper on 21st May 2010, to which PIA made a detailed submission. A Draft Research Report was released 25 February 2011 and PIA made a second submission addressing the Draft Report. The final full report was released on Monday, 16 May 2011.

The Australian Government's ‘Sustainable Australia – Sustainable Communities, A Sustainable Population Strategy for Australia’ was released on Friday 13 May 2011. PIa made a submission to the Issues Paper which preceded the release of the final strategy.
Our Cities, Our Future - A National Urban Policy for a productive, sustainable and liveable future
The final national urban policy, 'Our Cities, Our Future - A National Urban Policy for a Productive, Sustainable and Liveable Future' was released 18 May 2011. Previous to this the Australian Government released a discussion paper entitled ‘Our Cities - building a productive, sustainable and liveable future’ in early 2011, to which PIA made a submission, they have also made a Joint Statement and PIA Media Release
