Climate Change Adaptation Workshop for Planning Practitioners

PIA in support with the Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO) will be delivering ten training seminars around the country in 2006/2007 financial year on ‘the impacts of climate change for planning practitioners.’ Each seminar will be for one day and will be based on speakers and seminar activity in the morning and in a workshop capacity in the afternoon.

The aim of the training seminars is to educate and deliver up to date research and information from specialist speakers, and AGO is also interested in identifying gaps and deficiencies in current planning practices to frame future research. These seminars have been developed to enable planning practitioners to identify what additional support they will need to incorporate climate change risk assessment practices into their decision-making processes.

The one day seminar will comprise presentations on climate change focusing on:

  • relevance and impacts on planning systems;
  • The latest National and State Government policies and science issues;
  • The provision of tools and skills to assist and prepare planning practitioners to incorporate adaptation responses into their planning decisions;
  • Profiling a local case study implementation response to climate change; and
  • The opportunity for practitioners to identify what are the current and future climate change risks, and what additional support is needed to manage any deficiencies in planning practices.
