Membership Options

There are nine (9) grades of membership within the Planning Institute; seven for individuals, and two for organisations.

Joining PIA is an indication of a commitment to and interest in the planning profession. Each grade has specific membership requirements. Admission to membership is determined by satisfaction of the appropriate membership criteria. All memberships, except Associate Company and Local Government, represent individual affiliation with the Institute. Membership is not transferable.

Note that additional requirements apply to people who hold overseas qualifications.

Entry Grades for Individuals

Member Grade: FULL MEMBER

For

Qualified and experienced planning practitioners, actively involved in, and committed to, at least one planning discipline. Admission to the Member grade is a verification by PIA of a person’s professional competence and Members must agree to meet annual requirements of professional development and practice.

Individuals may seek membership in more than one discipline, but must meet the requirements for each.

Member Grade: ASSOCIATE

For

Individuals who are interested in, and committed to, the planning profession; but who may not have the qualification or experience to practice professionally may become Associates of PIA. Includes people who provide administrative or technical support to planners; as well as those who employ and/or manage professional planners.

Eligibility Requirements

Current interest or involvement in planning profession.

Member Grade: GRADUATE

For

Individuals who have recently completed a course of study that has led them to practise in planning or a related field. Usually, Graduates will hold a qualification that will later make them eligible for membership through one or more Chapters.

Completion (not more than 3 years ago) of a planning-related tertiary qualification.

Member Grade: STUDENT

For

Individuals enrolled in a course of study that can lead to professional practice in planning.

Eligibility Requirements

Current enrolment in a tertiary course of study (full-time or part-time as appropriate).

Admission to the grade of Student is for individuals studying their first planning-related degree only.

Entry Grades for Organisations

Member Grade: ASSOCIATE COMPANY

For

Organisations (including agencies and firms) with an interest in and commitment to planning or a related discipline may join PIA as Associate Companies. Associate Companies nominate up to two contact people to receive information on behalf of the organisation.

Member Grade: LOCAL GOVERNMENT

For

Local authorities that wish to extend the benefits of PIA affiliation to their elected members may become PIA Local Governments.

Invitational Grades of Membership

Member Grade: FELLOW

For

Individuals who are considered to have made an exceptional contribution to the planning profession and/or PIA over a significant period of time. Nominees must have met Member requirements to be eligible to become Fellows.

Admission to the grade of Fellow is by invitation of PIA Board only.

Member Grade: LIFE FELLOW

For

Individuals who are considered to have made an exceptional contribution to the planning profession and/or to PIA over a significant period of time. Nominees must have received recognition as Fellows to be eligible to become Life Fellows.

Admission to the grade of Life Fellow is by invitation of PIA Board only.

Member Grade: HONORARY FELLOW

For

Individuals who are considered to have made an exceptional contribution to the planning profession and/or PIA but who do not meet the requirements for membership.

Requirements

Admission to the grade of Honorary Fellow is by invitation of PIA Board only.
