Consolidation vs. Sprawl: Choices for Metropolitan Growth

REGISTRATION FORM

A presentation by Dennis Hardy, Emeritus Professor of Urban Planning

Adelaide is contemplating how best to accommodate rapid metropolitan growth
over the next thirty years.

The sharp choice that faces Adelaide is one that is repeated, in one form or
another, in cities across the world. It has become a global issue or two reasons.
One is that metropolitan areas are, almost without exception, growing larger –
in some cases very rapidly and to previously unimaginable population levels. A
second reason is that we can no longer ignore pressing issues of environmental
sustainability: future urban growth as to take increasing account of the earth ’s
fragile and diminishing resources. For both these reasons the choices that are
made now by planners are crucial.

Evidence will be drawn from the USA and Western Europe, as well as China and
the UAE. Moreover, the question of appropriate densities is not new one and
some lessons from history will be included.

Followed by Drinks and nibbles.
