Connecting the Region

The PIA Illawarra & South Coast Branch and Goulburn Mulwaree Council welcomes planners and related professionals to a one day seminar Connecting the Region which brings together a number of presentations on major infrastructure projects for the Illawarra, Southern Highlands, Southern Tablelands and South Coast Regions of NSW.
There is increasing emphasis on the need for a regional approach to infrastructure planning and coordination between the NSW, ACT and Federal Governments. This has lead to a renewed focus on nationally significant infrastructure projects such as the Brisbane-Sydney-Canberra-Melbourne Very Fast Train (VFT) and other regionally significant projects including Main Road 92 between Nowra and Nerriga and the Southern Highlands Source Project which pipes water 80 kilometres from Wingecarribee Reservoir to Goulburn.
These projects provide opportunities for increased social and economic prosperity and sustainable growth throughout the region. The challenge for planners will be to balance growth with protection of the rich environmental, cultural and historical characteristics of the region.
With some local councils in the region now about to commence their first 5-year review of their Standard Instrument LEPs, there is a need to re-visit the broader regional strategic planning frameworks including the Sydney–Canberra Corridor Regional Strategy 2006-2031 and Illawarra Regional Strategy 2006 -2031. What have these strategies delivered to date? What will the future hold for a more connected region? What are the strategic directions for the region over the next 30 years?

It is fitting that Goulburn, Australia’s first inland city, hosts this seminar having been up until 1875 the southern terminus of the southern railway line from Sydney. It may soon be a regional stop along the way to Melbourne riding a very fast train.

The seminar coincides with the annual Celebration of Heritage & Roses Festival held from 10-18 March – so after spending a day thinking about the big issues for the region, why not stay on for a couple of days to smell the roses?
